Shallowford Farm

Shallowford Farm, set deep in the heart of the beautiful Dartmoor National Park is the redevelopment of a moorland farm, run by the Shallowford Trust as an educational retreat for visiting children and adults. The Trust’s ambition was to develop the farm to secure its future and extend the range of groups who can benefit from its work. Our proposals incorporated an holistic and sensitive approach to ensure the atmosphere and nature of the farm was not compromised.

Shallowford Farm comprises a combination of medieval farmhouse and newly converted medieval barns along with modern agricultural barns. Shallowford Farm is a working medieval hill farm which has provided a huge range of experiences for young and old over the last 40 years.

Three key aspects were to provide safe access around the site for visiting children and adults and greater residential accommodation on-site. Providing modern farm buildings ensures the farm can function efficiently and to modern farming standards. Shallowford Farm is well positioned to continue to provide and extend the Dartmoor hill farm experience for many years to come.

The accommodation has been designed to allow a great flexibility to the site, allowing it to provide a mixture of daily or residential experiences. The use of natural materials, including granite stone walling and natural lime pointing, were carefully chosen due to the Grade II listing which covers the farm. Existing openings were retained with new timber joinery used throughout.
