Woods end House

Voted winner of the Channel 5 series ‘I own Britain’s Best Home’, Woods End is a striking combination of contemporary and traditional design that captures the essence of modern living.

Floor to ceiling windows from all rooms provide views out to the garden and surrounding countryside whilst simultaneously flood the interior with natural light.

Clad externally in Western Red Cedar, left to naturally weather to a silvery grey, the core of the building is a bolted Douglas fir structure resting on a piled substructure, with the Douglas fir being homegrown near to Longleat. Stainless steel rods, with turnbuckle adjustment, tie the curved roof members, giving a sense of lightness to the trusses and minimising interruption of the curved plastered ceilings.

Simple plastered wall panels are set between principal structural posts and beams, most of which are exposed internally.

The glass stair allows shafts of sun and daylight to filter through the building while emphasising the inside-outside theme.

The landscaping, with its water features, bridges, decks and terraces has been designed to complement its surroundings and offer a space of tranquility and calmness.

Designed to harmoniously sit within its woodland landscape, the stepping forms of the building echo the natural undulations of the surrounding countryside and the gently sweeping curves of the river that meanders through the site.

The mulit-level curving roofs are blanketed in beautiful moss sedum, set back from the eaves and verges, which give the roofs a fine, crisp and elegant silhouette, thats changes colour with the seasons.

The dwelling is divided into three principal wings, with the ground floor being predominently open plan, but with the form of the building and the placement of the structural frame offering division to the spaces whilst a natural flow from room to room remains.

“This house has its own sense of calm and serenity which I am sure reflects the fact that it has been respectfully built taking the landscape into consideration from the very beginning. It is a wonderful place in which to live and has a positive effect on everyone that visits”. AB (client) from ‘At home in Britains Best Home’
